Word of the Week Wedneday

Hello Wednesday raviolis.  Today is word of the week Wednesday and today's word is:

"OUCH"

Why "Ouch"?  Well, grandma-ma's braces still hurt and every morning I wake up and say, "ouch"!  Now, the braces really don't hurt, it is the inside of grandma-ma's mouth that is still sore from all of the boo boos in her mouth.

Everybody gets boo boos and ouches. 

This lion cub playfully bit his daddy's tushie (buns, bum, hynie, butt). Daddy lion howled. LOL

Caleb said "ouch" when he got stitches.

Kaitlyn said "ouch" when she got stitches too.  But Kaitlyn laughed when her daddy put whipped cream on her nose.

 It's always best to receive a kiss when you have a boo boo or ouch.  I hope these doggie kisses make this little girl's hurt go away.

Transparent Animals

Hello my raviolis.  Grandma-ma found an article about transparent animals and thought you might like to see some of these unique creatures.

This is called a glasswing butterfly.  The wings are so transparent that they look like glass. 

Jelly fish or "jellies" are transparent and they look like ghosts of the sea.  Grandma-ma loves to watch them swim.

This is a transparent flounder. 

This little frog is transparent too.l  You can see through it's skin and look at all of its organs. 

This is grandma-ma favorite transparent animal.  It is a barrel eye fish.  Only the head of this fish is transparent. 

If  you look at the top of the head you will see two green eyes.  Yes, these are the eyes of the fish.  Not the little eyes you see above the mouth.  Those are actually nostrils or like gills for the fish to breathe.  The green eyes at the top of his head move all around so he can see from side to side and from top to front.  There are lots of other animals that are transparent.  Can you share one with grandma-ma?  If so, post the name of a transparent animal.  Grandma-ma loves you all.

Grandma-ma has braces

Hello my raviolis.  This has been a busy week for grandma-ma.  Busy at work, busy at home and busy at the dentist. Today. grandma-ma had braces put on her teeth to straighten them out.  Yes, even grandma-ma's get braces.

It took two hours for the dentist and his staff to put the braces on my teeth and he also had to extract a tooth to make room for my crowded teeth.  Did it hurt to have it pulled?  NO, it did not. The doctor gave me a shot of Novocaine and then after my mouth went numb, he extracted the middle center tooth. It was very, very crooked and in the way of my other teeth.

Here is a picture of what grandma-ma's teeth looked like before they put the braces on.

They are very crooked and close together.  It makes flossing very difficult.

Here are my new braces.  Can you see where the missing tooth used to be?  That little hole will heal up and then you won't see it.  See how crooked the wires are?  As the weeks go by, they will begin to straighten up grandma-ma's teeth.  I'm excited about that. It will be nice to have a pretty smile. 

Now, do braces hurt?  No, the braces do not hurt.   But, my teeth tingle because of the pressure of the wires.  I will eat soups and jello for a few days.  The hard part about braces is getting used to the plastic on my teeth that scraps the inside of my mouth.  That is sore and it will take about a week to build up a callous on the inside of my mouth.  Then it will no longer be sore.  I will put a new picture up in March when I go for an adjustment.  The dentist will tighten up the wire and it will add more pressure to my teeth to straighten up.

Word of the Week Wednesday

Hello my raviolis.  Today is word of the week Wednesday and today's word comes from Owen's spelling bee.  This is one of the words he had to spell (and he spelled it correctly) and it is a favorite word of grandma-ma's.  That word is

"paramecium"

What is a paramecium you ask.  Well, a paramecium is a small, one celled (unicellular) living organism that can move, digest food, and reproduce. They belong to the kingdom of Protista, which is a group (family) of similar living micro-organisms.  Micro-organism means they are a very small living cell. I like them because they look like little footprints in sand.  A paramecium is an oval, slipper shaped micro-organism, rounded at the front/top and pointed at the back/bottom.  Covering the outside of the organism are many tiny hairs, called cilia.



Here is a video of a paramecium eating yeast (the yeast has been dyed red so you can see how this little once celled animal stuffs itself with the food).  Look how quickly it moves.

This may be a difficult word to use in three sentences, but let's give it a go anyway.  Here is grandma-ma's first sentence:

The paramecium moves very quickly with the aid of the tiny hairs around the animal.

Gang of lunch snatchers

Hello my wonderful raviolis.  I'm so glad to be back posting on your blog.  I have missed you all.  Grampy and I were in Mexico the last week in December and stayed at a pretty resort in Playa del Carmen.  We had a large lunch restaurant at the pool area that served good things to eat.  But, you could not leave any food on your table for a moment or a "gang" of little thieves would take over your table and eat your food and drinks.  This little gang of Mexican raccoons are called Coati or Coatimundo.  They are from the raccoon family and very friendly.  A family left their lunch on the table and went into the pool and this group of Coati's came running out of the jungle and descended on the food.  It was funny to watch them, especially when they had the soda glass over their head.

This is my favorite picture of the Coati's that were eating and drinking all of the food.  They are so cute and friendly.  They sure left a mess though.

Hello my raviolis.  Grandma-ma and Grampy just returned from visiting the Colorado ravs and learned they had never, ever seen the movie, The Sound of Music.  Well, we immediately ran to Walmart and picked up a copy for them to watch and we had a living room full of family watching and singing along.  It was so much fun so here is our favorite song from the movie. 

Now, everyone let's sing along..."high on a hill lived a lonely goatherd, ladee oha ladee oha la ee oo.

Hubert, the little scamp

Hello my Saturday raviolis. I want to share with you a commerical for Mr Bubble that I used to watch on TV when I was a little girl.

It is in black and white because that is the way television used to look when I was little. This commerical always made me laugh for a lot of reasons. Can you pick them out?

Word of the Week Wednesday

Hello my Wednesday raviolis.  Today's word may seem a little silly to you, it is

"goldfish".

This is the type of goldfish you probably know best.

Grandma-ma was in Walmart yesterday buying some fish food and they had these really neat species of goldfish in one of their tanks.  It is called a Black Moor Goldfish.

Look at the big bug-eyes on this goldfish?  How neat is this?  Now you may ask why this is called a goldfish when it isn't gold.  Very good question.  "Goldfish" is a species of fish and were many of their kind are a brilliant gold color, it is the type of fish that makes them a goldfish.   The Black Moor Goldfish is one of the most beautiful types of goldfish and is a beautiful black velvet in color.   The Black Moor is a popular and hardy fish which is generally easy to care for.  The Black Moor can be kept with other types of goldfish and will swim in a school with them. He also gets along with many other types of fish and can be kept easily in a community tank, however you must be aware that they like to dig and may uproot many of your plants and other decorations.  Grandma-ma took this picture of this big, bug-eyed beauty while he was swimming around in the Walmart tank.

 

I think they are funny and have big cartoon like faces with their big bulging eyes.  They were very friendly and would swim right up to the tank wall to look at you.  So let's use the word goldfish in three sentences today.  Here is grandma-ma's first sentence:

The Black Moor is a pretty goldfish with big eyes.

Word of the Week Wednesday

Oh My goodness, my Wednesday raviolis.  It has been 8 days since Grandma-ma last posted on your blog.  She has been running around like a chicken with her head cut off.  She is moving so fast that she has to slow down to speed up.  I bet you are all just as busy. The months of November and December are always very busy with all of the wonderful holidays that will soon be here. So, today's word is

"relax"

Yes, that is a great word for all of us.  When we are so busy that we don't know what to do next, we need to STOP.  Breathe in and breathe out slowly and deeply. 

Stretch our arms and legs out long and lean, lay down on your bed or the floor and stretch again.  Enjoy the beautiful day that we have with friends or by yourself...nothing wrong with a little alone time.

This frog sure knows how to relax.  So are we understanding what the word "relax"means?  To slow down, ease up on what you do, be less rigid, release.  So here is grandma-ma's first sentence using the word relax: 

Grandma-ma has another busy day today, but when she gets home, she is going to kiss Kota on the head, make some eggy bread for supper, spread out on the sofa and relax.

Ahhhh, that feel good already.  Love to all of you my relaxing raviolis and remember, no matter how busy or how relaxed grandma-ma may be, she always loves you very much!  Love Grandma-ma
